Czech Informel Graphic Art

The Printmaking of Czech Art Informel Author: Jiří Krtička Abstract The thesis deals comprehensively with the printmaking of Czech Art Informel: explores its sources, principles and themes, evaluates contributions of individual artists and analyses the technique of "structural printmaking". The first artworks in Informel style in Czechoslovakia were created during World War II by Josef Istler who belongs to European protagonists of Art Informel movement. In post-war years Istler engaged mostly in painting and monotyping. For this reason it was Vladimír Boudník who became the leading personality of Czech Informel printmaking. In 1949 he declared in two manifestos of "explosionalism" his vision of a new art that he followed and carried out with admirable consistency till the end of his life. In the middle of 1950s Boudník started to elaborate "structural printmaking" - innovative printmaking methods that became a way to fulfil his vision. His work influenced strongly the whole generation of Czech artists and essentially helped to introduce Art Informel to Czechoslovakia against the ideologic resistance of the communist regime. Czech Informel achieved excellent qualities in Europe-wide comparison and "structural printmaking" became its original contribution to the world fine art. Keywords Art Informel,...
Jan Kotík 1916-2002 - A Monograph

1 Abstract A monograph on Jan Kotík (1916-2002) introduces both his art and theoretical work, it deals with a historical and cultural context of the now-defunct Czechoslovakia. Kotík's - an artist's, theoretician's, published author's, educator's - artwork enjoys a prominent position in the context of Czech art of the second half of 20th century. An art-historical assessment of artwork was based on Kotik's artwork inventory and on all the documentation on Kotik's life and art work archived in the Documentation Department of the Institute of Art History of the Academy of Sciences of the CR and in private archives in the CR and Berlin. The study is based on a method of organic combination of biographical data and art-historical data with quotation of Kotik's theoretical texts. An evolution of artist's work is demonstrated chronologically with the context to Czech and world art. The monograph includes chapters: "Father Pravoslav's Art Studio and Study Years", "Art Group 42", "Possibilities of Applied Art", "Painting-Object", "Stay in Berlin", "Returns".
Informel expressions in the work of selected Czech female artists

The bachelor thesis is written as a study focused on artworks of selected female artists, who worked in the style of Czech informel. In the introductory chapter Czech informel is exposed firstly in the context of development and secondly in the artistic, cultural and culturepolitical context. Major characteristics of informel are set there and the framework for the main topic of the work is prepared, in which there is an information about the significant promotion of female artists in particular time period. In the following chapters, the selection of seven female artists is briefly presented. The study also tries to answer the question why did chosen artists prefered informel rather than any other artistic style for their work. Eva Kmentová and the Body Imprint in the Sixties and Seventies Art

The bachelor thesis deals with the physical imprint in the sixties and seventies Art. The time limitation is mainly based on the selected works of sculptor Eva Kmentová (1928-1980), in which the phenomenon of body imprint is present. The issue of body imprint is gripped in a broader theoretical context and is based on two decisive foreign works. Primarily the book of George Didi - Huberman Le Ressemblance par contace, and secondly the theoretical thesis of Rosalind Krauss and Yve-Alain Bois in their catalogue Formless : A User's Guide to the exhibition L'informe. The bachelor thesis shows a possible view on the body imprint as a dialectic phenomenon generated by meeting of formlessness - shapeless mass and of the form - represented by imprinted object. For deeper understanding of Eva Kmentová's background, the chapter summarizing the changes in Czechoslovakian informel art in the late fifties and early sixties is included. Within the context of imprint's indexical value the bachelor thesis turns to Roland Barthes and his theory of photography. It is noted that both the photography and the physical three-dimensional imprint share the barthesian values. Traces of time (changes of artifical textures as an inspiration for creative work)

JANA BLAHNÍKOVÁ Keywords: texture, matter, art informel, existentialism, time, change, traces, beauty, ugliness, imagination Abstract: The Master Thesis concerns itself with changes of artificial textures as an inspiration for creative work. By artificial textures are meant paints and layers on objects, on which time has left its mark. A part of the Thesis deals briefly with the basic categories of aesthetics with special regard to texture change. The Thesis maps out the Czech and the world art scene of the 1950s and 1960s and focuses on the main artists of that period, whose work relates to the subject. The theoretical base is linked with the artists and art schools of thought, which is presented in the didactic section a part of which I used in my practical work and described in the reflection.
